Cristiano Ronaldo’s hat trick against Atletico mired by offside controversy

Real Madrid put on a master class in its first leg of its Champion League semifinal against crosstown rivals Atletico on Tuesday, entirely thanks to star Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored all three of the team’s goals. It was the 32-year-old’s 42nd hat trick for Real Madrid.

The first goal of the match, however, didn’t come without a bit of controversy. Ronaldo appeared to be offside when his teammate first crossed the ball to him. Ronaldo wasn’t able to score off that cross, but under most circumstances play would’ve stopped and Atletico would’ve been awarded possession of the ball. Instead, the ball popped back to one of his teammates who attempted the cross again and this time, onside, Ronaldo headed it into the net.

Even if that goal didn’t count, Real would’ve likely won thanks to Ronaldo’s efforts. He ended up sending two more balls into the net to rack up his second hat-trick in a row. Ronaldo also scored three goals against Bayern earlier this month.

There was no disputing Ronaldo’s latter two goals Tuesday. He made both shots count, using his powerful right foot to laser the ball past Atletico’s Jan Oblak.

Atletico now has a hole to climb out of as the team returns to its home stadium next week for the second leg of the semifinal. To beat Real, Atletico will have to score three goals, if the side can shut out Ronaldo and his teammates and win a penalty shootout, or it will have to score even more à la how Barcelona beat Paris St. Germain in March. After going down 4-0 in Paris, Barcelona bounced back at Camp Nou to win 6-1. Barcelona failed to make it past the Champions League quarterfinals this year, however, falling to Juventus earlier this month.
